Fluke of Starry Knight / Ser (BC) Confirmed in the catalog

Starry Knight / Ser (BC) @125014

"Starry Knight" is the 2024 calf of Fallen Knight known from observation of mother and calf pair on Aug 21st, 2024 in San Juan Islands according to Rebekah Hardee. This whale suffered difficult times in the summer of 2025, twice entangled in fishing gear, and twice freed. The first years are challenging for humpback whales; after close to year with mom growing about 45kg (100lbs) per day nursing on rich milk, each young whale is on their own and must learn to feed and navigate a dangerous world. For Starry Knight, the summer of 2025, first summer on his or her own, was particularly challenging. In July, the whale was found entangled in fishing gear. Trained and authorized responders from The Whale Museum and Cascadia Research Collective freed the whale from a life-threatening entanglement. Both organizations are part of the Pacific Northwest Entanglement Response Network and this coordinated effort, spanning two countries and multiple organizations, saved the whale from a likely fatal outcome. Read the full story here. Then in August, the whale was found entangled again in almost the same location. Again we are pleased to share a successful outcome of disentanglement. Young Starry Knight may suffer in the long term from injuries and time not able to feed during these two stressful entanglements. We here at Happywhale will be looking for the whale non-stop.
